Getting away from Distractions
When we talk of distraction, for every individual the definition may be slightly different. Yet to put it in a simpler way, anything that shifts us from the present state of mind is âDistractionâ for us. It can be thoughts, communications, situations, many things. But categorically, distraction is divided in two variants by scientists:
1. Sensory Distraction
2. Emotional Distraction
Why do we really need to move away from distraction? Is it that we harness our little need of hustle bustle so strongly, that we are addicted to the distractions? The fact is in todayâs technologically-advanced world, with so many devices which fit in our hand, at a touch of our finger, we can find out way too many things. So is it good, or is it bad?
According to global research by Steelcase, the average worker checks their inbox 30 times in an hour and the average UK employee checks their smartphone more than 200 times per day. A Gensler USA study revealed that workers report interruptions every 15 minutes.
The scientific progress indeed is good; but has a side effect as well. With too much on plate, we the âinformation mongersâ do not really know most of the times, why we are searching things, why we are checking pictures, why we are waiting for responses. The power of availability that gives out way too much dose of Dopamine is making us fall in that vicious cycle.
Dopamine is said to be the the neuro-transmitter of pleasure; and as a reward it keeps us charged. There are natural stimulants which are beneficial and release dopamine; like exercise, moderate sunlight, walk in the nature. And there are artificial stimulants like caffeine or drugs as well.
To add further are the cell phone, tablets, computers where people constantly look for validation for that extra dose of dopamine. Knowingly or unknowingly, the validation everyone tries to look for from these various social media platforms is actually increasing the narcissist tendencies, anxiety levels in some cases and depression in others. This further results in fluctuating blood pressure, obesity due to binge eating, thanks to distraction! Distraction not only has a serious impact on physical health but affects mental health as well. People who face the issue of âserious distractionâ of high orders, ADHD, mostly do not even realize it. As at those moments they refuse to use their logical brain.
In one of the articles, Beverly D. Flaxington mentions that âwhile the âAge of Informationâ may have made us better connected and informed, it has also made our lives more rushed, hectic and distracted.â
âResearch is now proving that the brain does not quite cope with the amount of information we receive, and our ability to disconnect from the outside and be present in the moment is actually decreasing.â
According to Adam Gazzaley, MD, PhD., a renowned cognitive neuroscientist and the professor of Neurology, Physiology, and Psychiatry at University of California, San Francisco, âOur attention defines the ways in which we perceive things; furthermore, it allows for a degree of cognitive control that helps us function.
